The NSMC's social marketing online training course offers you the chance to access the expertise of our classroom courses, planning tools and resources, all at a pace, time and place that suits you. 

The online course provides an introduction to social marketing from basic principles and terminology, through to more detailed guidance on how to plan, manage and evaluate your own behaviour change programme. It also offers the chance to gain an accredited qualification. 

If your job involves trying to influence people's behaviour, whether you work in public health or financial services, in a local authority or a company HR department, then this course can help you. 

Course Structure

Our complete online social marketing course includes seven online modules which contain videos, animations, scenarios and quizzes with prompts and feedback to reinforce what you have learnt. Each module also contains downloadable content such as guides and tools to help you apply your new knowledge to your work. 

Each module should take approximately one to three hours to complete. At the end of each module there is a multiple choice quiz which will test your understanding and ability to meet the learning outcomes listed at the start of each module. 

The seven modules cover:

Module 1: An introduction to social marketing.

Module 2: Getting started with social marketing.

Module 3: Learning from others.

Module 4: Researching your audience.

Module 5: Insight into action.

Module 6: Developing your intervention.

Module 7: Implementing and evaluating your intervention.

We are also able to offer online one-to-one tutorials to help you get the most out of your learning. Hosted by one of our experienced social marketing experts, we offer 2 hours of tuition to anyone purchasing Course Options 1 or 2 outlined below. The cost of this online tuition, which will take place at a time that suits you, is £150 (excluding VAT). We can also arrange additonal tuition if you decide to take the CIM course and need some help preparing for the examination.

If you are not sure about whether or not to opt for this additional tutoring, don't worry, as you can always add it on later.

Purchasing online social marketing training

Our online social marketing training is available in three options:

  • Option 1: Module 1 only: An introduction to social marketing.
  • Option 2: Modules 2-7.
  • Option 3: Complete course Modules 1-7.

The cost of these options are:

  • Option 1: £40 (excluding VAT).
  • Option 2: £225 (excluding VAT).
  • Option 3: £250 (excluding VAT).

At present we are unable to process credit card payments through our website, so if you wish to purchase the online training please email listing which option you wish to buy, and any additional tutition that you require. We will then send you an invoice and once we have received your payment through either PayPal or Bank Transfer, we will issue you with a link and password to the training course.

Please note that if you are purchasing this course from within the UK or the rest of the European Union, you will also need to pay VAT (Value Added Tax) which is currently 20%. This amount will be clearly shown on your invoice. 


After completing the online modules, you can gain The NSMC's Level 4 Social Marketing Award, accredited by the UK Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) by passing a one-hour multiple choice question assessment. The cost of sitting this exam is £50 (excluding VAT).

The assessment, which must be purchased separately, needs to be taken under exam conditions and be independently invigilated in order to meet the CIM's rigorous standards. We will provide full details of the assessment requirements when you purchase the exam and, of course, we are happy to chat to you about them at any time.
